How do I stream a game from my phone?

Go live from the sideline so your team can watch from anywhere.

Anyone on the team except Fans can stream a game from the Football Play Card mobile app, so the grandparent who cannot make it still sees every snap. Up to 20 people can watch at once.

How do I go live?

Streaming needs the latest version of the Football Play Card app. Update it from the App Store or Google Play before game day.

  1. Open the game in the mobile app. It opens on Game Day.
  2. Under Live stream, check Stream orientation, just below Go Live. It starts on Landscape, which fits more of the field. Select it to switch to Portrait.
  3. Select Go Live.
  4. Allow the camera and microphone when your phone asks.
  5. Wait for the connection test in Video settings, then select Continue. It recommends the best quality your signal can hold: 720p, 480p or 360p.

Right above Go Live, the card says "This game will be recorded and saved for your team. Mute during huddles and private conversations." While you stream, your screen shows Recording.

Everyone else who can watch gets a notification that the game is live.

How do I stop streaming?

Select End Stream. The person streaming, a coach, or the game's scorekeeper can end a stream.

How do I get a good stream?

  • Stay in the app with the screen on. Leaving the app for more than about 15 seconds ends the stream, and on iPhone so does locking the screen. On iPhone a phone call ends it too, so let calls go to voicemail.
  • Watch your signal. A slow upload gets a lower quality. If the stream has not started after about 2 minutes, the app tells you the upload may be too slow.
  • Bring a charger. A stream can run for up to 4 hours, then ends on its own.
  • Keep the phone steady. A fence post or a tripod beats a hand-held shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can stream a game?

  • Coaches, players with an account, Parent/Guardians and Family & Friends. Fans cannot. Streaming needs a State Champion plan, which your players and followers normally have through your team.

Can I stream from a computer?

  • Not with the computer's camera. On the website, Begin Stream opens Start streaming from your phone, which points you to the mobile app. If you stream with software such as OBS, select I have an encoder, then Show connection settings for the Ingest server (RTMPS) and Stream key.

The app says it needs the camera and microphone. What do I do?

  • Allow the camera and microphone for the app in your phone's Settings, then select Go Live again.

Can two people stream the same game?

  • No. A game has one stream at a time. If someone is already streaming, watch theirs.

Is my stream saved?

  • Yes. Every stream is saved for your team and shows up under Videos on the game's Game Day tab a few minutes after it ends. If the stream stops for more than about a minute and starts again, each stretch is saved as its own part. See "How do I watch a recorded game?"

Why did my stream stop?

  • You left the app, or locked your iPhone, for more than about 15 seconds, or took a call on your iPhone. Select Go Live to start again.
  • Your connection dropped and did not come back.
  • The stream reached the 4-hour limit.
  • A coach or the scorekeeper ended it.
